The Worminator Project!

Concerned about climate change and how much food waste is going to landfill?

Wish you had a way of "recycling" your own organic kitchen waste and leftovers?

Do you have space in your kitchen, basement or back yard for a neat plastic worm bin around 30 inches tall?

Would you like to turn your food waste into vermicompost; a highly potent organic fertiliser commonly referred to as "black gold"?

Are you a friend to worm-kind?

If you answered "yes" to all the above, vermicomposting (composting with worms) is for you!

As Ben & Jerry UK's Climate Change Ambassador for 2008, I am collaborating with students of the University of Manchester to set up working examples of vermicomposting kitchen food waste, to use this as an example of how food waste can be diverted from landfill while resulting in a high-value horticultural end-product.

What does food waste have to do with climate change? It is food waste that, in landfill, gets compacted with other waste and emits methane and carbon dioxide in anaerobic conditions. These greenhouse gasses are released directly into the atmosphere.

My project: The idea is to recruit, using Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and other giveaways as added incentives, a team of 50 student “Worminators”. These students will be assigned a worm bin for their communal kitchen and be educated and trained to use, maintain, and be responsible it.

That's not just 50 people reducing their food waste; if each worminator shares his/her bin with 3 others, that's 200 people's waste being diverted from landfill!

While their worms get adjusted to their new homes, for the 1st month Worminators will keep a record of how many kg of food waste they throw away per week. This will allow me to compile data of how many kg of food waste an average student generates, therefore how many kg typically ends up in landfill.

You too can be an honourary Worminator by installing a worm composting bin in your kitchen or backyard!

Feel free to drop me a line if you're interested and I'll be happy to help you find the right kit for your home :)

Do your bit; help combat climate change with global worming!  Every little bit helps...

Illegal fishers plunder the Arctic
Gland, Switzerland: Pervasive and hugely profitable illegal fishing for Atlantic cod and Alaska pollock in the Arctic threatens the health of these globally important fisheries and their resilience to climate change, a new WWF report shows.

The World Needs a Farming Revolution! Declares U.N. Report
Oil is setting record high prices. People are rioting over the price of food in Haiti, Egypt, parts of West Africa and the Philippines. Since March 2007 the price of soybeans is up 87%, and the price of wheat has risen 130%. Global grain stores are at the lowest levels on record. Amid this turmoil the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) release...

Food Shortages
It seems like the world's latched onto first generation bio-fuels as the answer before really considering the consequences. Why? I guess we'd all like to think that we can continue to lead the same fun-filled lifestyle and that technology will save us from ourselves. But maybe a more fundamental shift needs to happen.

I love this grass roots action.  Makes you wonder why retailers in other cities have got to prevaricate about.  Banning plastic bags works.  Simple.

Is Living Off the Grid Right For You?
Like many things in the greater green sphere, living off the grid -- that is, without reliance on public utilities for things like electricity and water -- has jumped into national prominence over the past few years; if Daryl Hannah is doing it, we should all be aware of it. There's an awful lot to like about living off-grid, and it's a little different for everybody, but in many cases it requires a few lifestyle modifications and a different day-to-day routine. So, how do you know if you should live off the grid? First, figure out if you want to. If you can answer "Yes!" to questions like, "Do you want to stop...

Outsourcing the Climate Skeptics
Their views roundly dismissed in all but the most partisan right-wing outlets, climate skeptics are eagerly seeking new audiences - in some of the countries most likely to be hardest-hit by climate change. The Hindustan Times, a prominent newspaper published in India, recently published two very misleading articles on the subject of climate change that essentially argued that it wasn't such a big deal and that the

Salt Water Proposed as Cure for Common Cold in Children
With cold and flu season in full swing, there’s more than a few parents worried about how to treat their children's colds without traditional medication and the answer just may be a dose of salt water. Researchers in Europe recently reported that a nasal spray made from Atlantic Ocean seawater eased wintertime cold symptoms while preventing them from returning among children ages 6 to 10. ...

Nature Knows Best

These are the stories I love. When the best cure for a modern ailment turns out to be straight out of nature and something humans have been using for generations. Lately, I've been using an echinacea tincture to ward off colds and flu. So far, it's been a real tonic and cured all signs of the sniffles. But I think the next time my throat hurts, i'll give salt a try.

From Patent Protection To Patent Sharing
Taking their inspiration from the success of free and open-source software, where information sharing has led to the bountiful new product creation, IBM, Nokia, Pitney-Bowes and Sonya have created the Eco-Patent Commons to share their environmental patents. In this open-source domain administered by the WBCSD, registered companies can contribute technology patents that benefit the environment but don’t represent an essential source of business advantage for them. Until today there has been no organized effort to make patents available, without royalty, to help enable the world community to reduce waste, pollution, global warming, and energy demands. Their interest in this i...

The Ecopak: Moulded, Printed, Biodegradable Paper-based Packaging
We’re big fans of packaging done right, and we really hate packaging done wrong. It’s no wonder then that we were intrigued when Mark Appleford of Varden contacted us about their new Ecopak packaging solution that “combines elements of pulp paper thermoforming with a specialized printing technology to create highly original and sustainable packaging.” According to Mark, the process uses recycled paper and cardboard pulp, but is finished to the same standard as regular card...

We're always interested in closing loops on packaging. But are often hindered by our need to be stored at -18degrees celsius. This seems really interesting though, I've even emailed the company to find out more. Watch this space!

A Recycled Ski Chair
If you love skiing and want to think about it in every season, here is just the chair for your home or garden. A variation on the much beloved Muskoka (Adirondack) chair but made of recycled skis, or snowboards, these chairs will give you a lift any time. Hand crafted and set into certified cedar, you could also have a coat rack made out of snowboards, tables with inlaid skis, benches with snowboard backs and even loveseats with ski backs. If you have a pair of skis that you want to remember forever, Green Mountain will custom design a chair or table around them. If you have old skis taking up space in the basement, they will take donated warped, cracked, out of dat...

Green Mountain Recycling
Vermont as a state is well known for skiing, recycling and being the home of Ben & Jerry's ice cream! It's great to read about a like-minded business combining two of this state's passions. And as for the third well, eating a few scoops of Vermont's finest ice cream while reclining in one of these chairs seems like the perfect summer's day to me...

Fucking Recycle, a Poster Collection by Becky Redman
Fucking Recycle is the latest poster collection by graphic designer Becky Redman. Designed to increase awareness and promote action, the 50 colourful and provoking posters do exactly that. With encouraging messages to get people to recycle everything that can possibly be recycled (glass, aluminium, paper, cans, etc.) and notes such as ‘one recycled aluminium can will save enough energy to power a television for three hours’, 'every eight months the UK produces enough waste to fill Lake Windermere’ or ‘plastic can take up to 50...

Avoid Recycling Don't Consume
I really like the strong language and simple analogies used in this recycling campaign, but I do have to agree with one web user who comments on the Treehugger website that perhaps we should be encouraging consumers to consume less in the first place.

Big Ideas For a Small Planet - The Work episode
‘Hi Ho, Hi Ho it’s off to work we go,’ tonight with Sundance Channel’s Big Ideas for a Small Planet . In this, the penultimate episode of motivating series, the producers ask; wouldn’t it be great to know exactly what the ecological footprint of your workplace was, so you could set about improving it? Mathis Wackernagel (co-creator of the ecological footprint concept) shows just how it’s done. Or maybe you like to work at the New Belgium Brewing Company—th...

Climate Change Initiatives
More brands are getting involved in the debate on Climate Change which is great to see, especially when they've leveraging their products to raise awareness on the issue.

Former applicants to the College have come to us with ideas for computer games on Climate Change, which were really interesting but without the banking of a big boy was going to be hard to achieve. This is a great opportunity for budding CCC applicants to send their ideas in!

best of luck

Breastfeeding is Eco-Friendly
Photo credit: Coastal Birth Score another one for the breast-is-best brigade. Breastfeeding is eco-friendly. (Or is this a d'oh moment for all you tree-hugging parental types?) Says Jessica Gunsch from BellaOnline:
The use of formula makes a huge negative impact on the planet by consuming energy, taking up space in landfills as well as polluting the air, water and ground. The production of formula uses hundreds of resources to create the final product including paper, metal, ink, pesticides, land, fertilizers, animals, water, fuel, crops, etc. Feeding a ...
